Waubonsie Valley Physical Education Dance Classes
The Waubonsie Valley Physical Education Department offers dance as an option for students junior and senior year. Students can sign-up for dance 1st, 3rd, and 4th quarter. During 2nd quarter, R.A.D. (self-defense) is offered in the dance track. The dance classes include: Jazz, Dance of the Decades, On Broadway, Hip Hop, Pom, and Tap. Students dance 3 days a week learning and practicing choreography specific to the dance unit. One day a week (Warrior Wednesday) there is an emphasis on cardiovascular endurance through activities such as dance fitness, step aerobics, kickboxing, Tabata, speed ladders, etc. Every Friday, students practice yoga to improve strength and flexibility while learning methods to become more mindful.
1. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in dance units, cardiovascular activities, body weight exercises, strength training, and yoga
2. Participate daily in moderate to vigorous intensity activity meeting the American Heart Association's weekly recommendations for physical fitness
3. Evaluate the effects of fitness choices and heredity on wellness
4. Explain how physical activity effects brain function
5. Demonstrate when to lead and when to be supportive to accomplish group goals
- I will respect the teacher, the equipment, the space, my peers, and myself every day
- I will be on time, dressed out, and actively participating in class every day
- I will not use my phone or technology during PE
- I will push myself when the activity or skill gets tough
- I will be honest with myself regarding my ability and fitness level
- I will complete my own work and pull my weight in group projects
Daily procedures for P.E.
1. Students will arrive to P.E before the tardy bell rings
2. Students will dress out in athletic clothing (sweats, shorts, t-shirts) and gym shoes
3. Students will lock up their valuables in their assigned locker
4. Students will report to the main gym for attendance 5 minutes after the tardy bell
5. Students will actively participate in the daily warm-up (WV-60) and PE activity
6. Students will be dismissed to the locker rooms the last 5 minutes of the period
7. Students will wait in the GYM until the bell rings
1. Student/teacher conference
2. Parent notification
3. Classroom alterations (assigned spots in the formation)
4. Referral to the dean or class house
